Anuradhapura
Renowned as the islands first ancient capital. One of the oldest cities in the world that gave rise to over 100 Sri Lankan great kings. You definitely must visit the Atamasthana in Anuradhapura which get filled with many adherents every year. Atamasthana includes Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanwelisaya, Thuparamaya, Lovamahapaya, Jetawanarama, AbhayagiriDagaba, Mirisaveti Stupa and Lankarama.
1.Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi
Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is renowned as the oldest survived sacred tree in the world. It is the sapling from the sacred and historical Bodhi tree under which Buddha enlightened. Ven. SanghamittaTherini brought it from Buddhagaya, India. Even today, Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is being worshipped and respected by the Buddhists from all around the world. The present age of this sacred Bo-tree is about 2248 years. A golden fence is guarding the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi under the guidance of Arahath Mahinda MahaThero who brought Buddhism to Sri Lanka. The Bodhi Tree was planted by KingDevanampiyatissa in his royal Park ‘MahaMeghavana’ in Anuradhapura. This highly sacred Bodhi tree is comparable to the living Buddha Dwells. It’s a specialty of Sri Maha Bodhi that anyone can peacefully worship without any hindrance. There is no fee for tourists. The month April record most of the tourists, devotees and visitors.
2.Ruwanwelisaya
Visit the wondrous stupa of Sri Lanka!
Ruwanwelisaya was built nearly 2500 years ago by great King Dutugamunu. The marvelous Ruwanwelisaya is situated next to Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi and renowned as the most venerated Buddhist site in Anuradhapura with a height of 150 feet and a diameter of 379 feet. The specialty of Ruwanwelisaya is its details of items involved in building the stupa from preparation of ground initiated by King Dutugamunu to the ending of constructions by his brother king Saddatissa had been fully recorded in the Mahavansa, the great Chronical of Sri Lanka. It’s a factor to wonder on why and whether this record keeping was done for a particular purpose. When you visit the stupa, you will witness statues of king Dutugamunu. Queen ViharaMahadevi (Mother of King Dutugamunu) and King BhathikaTissa made out of granite. It’s another must visit place to witness the great Stupa which is known as a feast of civil engineering marvel.
3.Isurumuniya
Renowned for its stone carvings which represents the most famous couple “Isurumuniya Lovers”. Isurumuniya was originally as MeghagiriViharaya. During king Devanampiyatissa era, the temple was constructed in Anuradhapura and is set around a lovely lotus pond. There is a beautiful story behind the most popular carving of Isurumuniya Lovers. The carving represents Prince Saliya [ the son of King Dutugemunu] and his mistress Asokamala. Asokamalacomes from a cast called “Chandala” and the princessSaliya fell in love with her and finally gave up the right to be the king. To marry Asokamala who is the girl of a lower cast. Even, today modern couples love to be called as the Isurumuniya couples. It is believed king Saliya gave up his kingship for true love. Another belief is that this lovely couple represent the god and goddess Parvathi of Hindubelief. the temple consists of marvelous and famous kinds of carvings. Visit this amazing temple to witness some mind blowing sculptures.
4.Thuparamaya
Renowned as the oldest and the first stupa that was built in the country after the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka. The stupa holds a special importance to most of the Sri Lankans. The bell shaped Thuparamaya is located in the highly sacred Mahamewnauyana in Anuradhapura. History records Thuparamaya was built the 3rd century BCE by the great king Devanampiyatissa. The stupa was made under the instructions of Mahinda Thero who brought Buddhism to Sri Lanka. Around the stupa, there is a unique architectural feature called ‘Vatadage’ (stupa house) which was built in the 1st century AC. Over 30 out of 179 circular pattern pillars can be still seen around the dagoba. Several kings have renovated it many times however the last recorded renovation was carried out in the 19th century CE. It is classified as a unique architecture in the history due to its rare interior structure. When you enter, you will see a pair of beautiful guard stones. 5.Mihintale
Renowned as the sacred place which gave rise to Sri Lankan Buddhism. Mihintale is regarded as a notable place in the Sri Lankan Buddhism History. You can enjoy climbing the Mahinda Mountain with a staircase made of 1840 steps. Mihintale is a mountain range that has three hills named Ambastala, Rajagiri and Anaikutti. On your way, you will witness playful monkeys gazing at you. It will be fun to watch them fighting over fruits given by people. The astonishing stupas, amazing shrines and adventurous rock caves will truly make your Sri Lankan tour an unforgettable memory.
