Kelaniya

Kelaniya is situated approximately 7km east of Colombo along the Colombo – Kandy road. Kelaniya is one of the main cities of the Gampaha district which is located towards the south of the Colombo district.

1.Kelaniya Raja MahaViharaya

Kelaniya Raja MahaViharaya is renowned as a sacred place where Lord Buddha and 500 Arahats once visited on the Vesak Day of the Buddha era 2531 as per the invitation of King Maniakkhika. Today the temple stands where Lord Buddha preached Dharma. KelaniViharaya is located about 6 km away from Colombo and prominence as one of the temples that stands out among other temples for its most exquisite sculptor arts. It has a history of over 2500 years and was renovated by number of kings. Kelaniya Raja MahaViharaya is a significant place in the Buddhism History of Sri Lanka. There is a popular folk verse for the temple which says, ‘the sin of a life time is all rendered null once Kelaniya is worshipped, a single time’. Visit this amazing sacred temple in Kelaniya!

2.Water World Kelaniya

Visit the only Public Aquarium in Sri Lanka! Water world, Sri Lanka is situated on the banks of the Kelani river with an area of 5 acres. It is a home to over 500 varieties of fish and invertebrates. The unique species, Arapaima who is the largest fresh water fish in the world is found at water world. Even the world’s most dangerous electricity generating fish, electric eel also can be witnessed here. One of the main attraction at Water World is its underwater Tunnel Aquarium which is the first in South Asia. Witness the breathtaking under water life and the dramatic style of sea creatures! Awissawella

Awissawella is a town in Sri Lanka, situated on the A4 route from Colombo to Ratnapura, Colombo District, approximately 59 km east of capital Colombo. It is also famous as Seethawakapura.

1.Leisure World

One of the best places to enjoy your vacation with amazing water sports and rides. The theme park welcomes all ages of visitors to a world of fun and amusement. Leisure World is located in the Awissawella electorate in Seethawaka, Kaluaggala. Visitors can enjoy paddle boats, Bumper Boat and Speed Boat rides here. Even some exciting water rides. 2.Seethawaka Wetzone Botanical Garden

Situated in Illukovita Village, close to Avissawella. SeethawakaWetzone Botanical Garden is the latest addition to the 5 beautiful Botanical Gardens in Sri Lanka. The Garden consists of 79 acres with Wet Zone Plants. The Garden was open for visitors in 2014 for the purpose of conserving endemic and threatened plants in Sri Lanka. Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanical Garden is an ideal destination for wedding Pre-shoots. Its scenic environment has attracted so many locals as well as tourists. You can spend some lovely time here by walking around the garden or else you can also get on the Buggy Cart. You don’t have to worry about food since there is a food outlet available in the garden. The garden has beautifully arranged flower patches, a well maintained lake where you can enjoy a boat ride. If you are seeking some fresh air in a scenic environment then, Seethawaka Botanical Garden is the ideal place. Visit this Photogenic Garden and enjoy some quite time away from your busy schedule.

Ingiriya

Ingiriya is a town in Kalutara District of Western Province . It is situated near the border of Western Province and Sabaragamuwa Province.

1.Paravithota

Regarded as one of the best places for bathing in Ingiriya. It’s just one-hour drive from Colombo. The wonderful place is a natural pool bordering the Medakanda Forest. Many hotels and other facilities are available around the area. If you are seeking some safe place for a bath, Paravithota is the ideal spot with little water stream. The environment is clean and calm. Certainly, you will enjoy some quality time since it is close to Colombo, Paravithota becomes the ideal place for a one day trips. It is also known as Parethota. The place is crowded on Weekends.

2.Nachchimale

Another spot for a safe bath. Nachchimale is a popular destination among locals and tourists for tiny stream that runs from the waterfall area. It’s a natural pool where you can chill with the family or friends. The waterfall and natural pool is found close to the town of Ingiriya. This is a safe place where you can enjoy, have a quick snack and create memories.

Note

Avoid swimming under the influence of alcohol.
Be careful since the rocks can be slippery.

Beruwala

Enjoy a picturesque coastal view. The city consists of plentiful resorts along with scenic beaches for relaxation. Visitors can enjoy delicious sea foods served freshly by many nearby hotels and restaurants.

1.Golden Mile Beach

Beruwala is ideal for some outstanding water sport facilities including diving, water skiing, Parasailing and Snorkeling. Beruwala is one of the spots that offers world class Scuba Diving and Snorkeling in Sri Lanka. Golden Mile is a must visit beach in Beruwala which is a pure beach of golden sand. Tourists can enjoy some safe swimming in any month throughout the year.

2.Barberyn International Lighthouse

Make sure to visit the Barberyn International Lighthouse that is well maintained and functional. It is a ten minutes’ boat ride to the island. A mind bending view can be seen of the light house that stands on a cliff 20 feet above the sea level. It is the one of the only four international lighthouses available in Sri Lanka.back in 2004, when Tsunami hit the island, this amazing lighthouse was not affected, escaping damage miraculously. As a visitor you might not be allowed to enter the lighthouse however still you can have a look at this wonderful lighthouse. Negombo

Negombo is famous as the Little Rome in Sri Lanka and it is the home to many ancient churches. Visitors can enjoy a fishing village atmosphere by visiting Negombo.

1.Negombo Beach

Negombo beach is one of the best tourist attractions in the city. Negombo is located within 7km from the Bandaranaika International Airport in Katunayake. Even Negombo beach offers opportunities for water sports. Tourists can hire all the water sport equipment’s for reasonable prices. It is an amazing spot for diving. 2.Angurukaramulla Temple

One of the must visit places in Negombo. Renowned for the epic Buddha statue which is six meters tall along with its dragon entrance. In 1978 Colombo was regarded as the commercial hub in Sri Lanka during the time when the administrative office was shifted to Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte. This bustling city has a history of over 600 years and a mixture of Portuguese, Moor, British and Dutch influences. 1.National Museum of Colombo

Best place to discover Sri Lankan history at a glance!

National museum was established during 1877. Mostly popular as the biggest museum in Sri Lanka, consisting personalized collections of the ancient kandyan dynasty rulers. The British governor, sir William henry Gregory is the founder of Colombo national museum. The museum is situated right in the heart of the Colombo city which is built according to an Italian architecture colonial type mention. The specialty about national museum is, when it was first open it had only 800 items to show case however with time it grew to over 100,000 items. Visitors can witness a unique collection of Sinhalese artwork, ancient royal regalia, ola manuscript and antique furniture. You will get to learn about Sri Lankan history as it will also conduct seminars and lectures periodically. National museum is open for visitors on every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. except national holidays.

2.Colombo Beira lake

A walk around the lake!

Renowned as one of Colombo’s famous land marks. Beira lake was constructed in 1521 by Portuguese with the aim of protecting Colombo fort from inland invasions. This wonderful lake is surrounded by a pedestrian way where anyone can spend some quality time by walking around the lake. Certainly, it is worth to visit the water temple SimaMalakaya which is a wooden pavilion surrounded by a banister Buddha statue. SimaMalakaya is one of the most visited temple by couples. Many couples visit this mind bending water temple on their wedding day. Do not forget to enjoy swan boat rides which is available around the area. You can have a swan shaped paddle boat for a cheap price. This two seater boat comes with vest for the safety. Undoubtedly, couples will enjoy a lovely boat ride here. At night an amazing view of the temple can be seen from the Beira lake especially when the temple is fully illuminated.

3.Gangaramaya temple.

One of the oldest Buddhist temples in Colombo. Renowned as the temple that organizes Sri Lanka’s most impressive and colorful annual Vesak festival which is loved by many. many people around Sri Lanka visit Colombo in order to witness this mind blowing festival. It has a history of 120 years. Initially, Gangaramaya temple was established by venerable Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thera in 1885.

You can observe the collection of artifacts and other objects of cultural, religion and historical value if you visit the Gangaramaya Temple museum. The museum consists of a range of ageless treasures around the globe such as Buddha statues, old coins, ancient ola leaf writings and other objects of Sri Lankan tradition and culture.

Mount Lavinia Beach

Mount Lavinia beach is one of the best and most popular beaches in Colombo. The clean beach is surrounded by many fine spots to grab a beer or food while you enjoy a swim with your loved ones. Thrilling view of the sunset will relax your mind. This picturesque scenery is a suitable location for photoshoots and picnics. National Zoological Garden

The National Zoological Garden of Sri Lanka is located in Dehiwala with an area of 30 acres consisting a rich collection of mammals, reptiles, birds and fishes. Dehiwala National Zoo is prominence as one of the oldest Zoo’s in Asia. The Zoo is a home to 72 species of mammals, 31 species of Reptiles, 65 species of Birds, 30 Species of Butterflies, 3 families of amphibians etc. the Zoo supports and promotes conservation by breeding certain endangered species through proper animal welfare. You can enjoy some quality time watching animal shows here especially a seal playing with a ball and some elephants dancing. There are number of shops inside the Zoo to buy snacks and drinks. One can enjoy a good time here watching how animals spend their lives. Chimpanzees here never fails to impress the visitors by showing their playful behavior. Visitors can learn some knowledge regarding each animal as every cage carry a small notice with some details of the animal which will certainly make your visit quite educational.

Dambulla

Dambulla is a large town, situated in the Matale District, Central Province of Sri Lanka. The city is filled with many historical places that carries a great history such as Sigiriya which is a UNESCO world heritage site in Sri Lanka.

1.Sigiriya

The Sri Lankan Lion Rock
Another eye catching location in the pearl of Indian ocean. Sigiriya is recognized as a UNESCO world Heritage site where the king Kasyapa lived after killing his father for the throne. King Kasyapa feared that his brother will kill him in return for the throne. His fear led him to build the majestic sigiriya rock castle. There was an unbelievable advanced system to supply water to the top of the rock. No one was able to identify the logic behind it till now. Undoubtedly, Sigiriya is called as the 8th Wonder of the World.

2.Dambulla Cave Temple

Also known as Jambukolavihara in the principal pali chronical of Sri Lanka. The rock temple is located 47 miles North West of Kandy. It is similar to the Mihintale caves which was occupied by Buddhist Hermits. Initially, the cave temple was constructed during the era of King VattagaminiAbhaya (103 BC and 89-77 BC) who is also known as King Valagamba. King Valagamba was hiding in this cave for 12 years, after he regained his Kingdom of Anuradhapura, he converted the caves into Buddhist temples to show his gratefulness for this safe place. He constructed walled partitions under the rock. The caves are capable of avoiding water seeping inside the caved area. There are 5 cave temples constructed by him. You can visit all the caves to witness beautiful old paintings and shining Buddha Statues over 2000 years old.

Kandy

Kandy is a religious as well as an administrative city and the capital of the central Province. The city is mostly famous for the home of the temple of the sacred tooth relic making Kandy a mostly visited tourist destination in Sri Lanka.

1.DaladaMaligawa

Home of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
Kandy is known as a major tourist attraction and it is most popular due to the Sacred Tooth Relic. Kandy is also known as MahaNuwara which is called as the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. It is considered as a misfortunate if you have not watched the mind blowing Kandy perahera in your life. The amazing Kandy perahera accompanies over 50 elephants and other traditional dancers, chieftains and drummers. You must visit Kandy during the months July and August to witness this eye-catching Buddhism event in Sri Lanka. Deep down in the Sri Lankan history, Kandy was a royal capital that was ruled by so many kings. DaladaMaligawa, the temple of the tooth relic has richly carved interiors which you will never witness anywhere in the world. Do not miss to take a walk around the Breathtaking Kandy Lake too.

  • Ideal time period to visit Kandy: January to April
  • Visitors can experience a moderate weather since it is the driest. July or August is also ideal in order to witness the colorful EsalaPerahera which is a 10-day festival.

Hatton

Prominence as the largest and the busiest city in the Nuwaraeliya District of Central Province and it is a major city of the Tea industry in Sri Lanka.

1.Adam’s Peak

Also known as Sri Pada, is a 2243m mountain in the central highland region of Sri Lanka. It is a tourist destination as it is regarded as an important pilgrimage site. The climb to Adam’s Peak is a physically exhilarating experience as you have to climb 5000-6000 crumbling stone steps. Indeed, it will be a great challenge, yet it’s worthwhile when you go to the top. It is approximately 2-4 hours’ trek depending upon your breaks and crowds while it will take 1-2 hours to come back down. The closest city is Dalhousie, but some use the Ratnapura route too. If you start to climb in the middle of the night, you can reach the peak by morning for a breathtaking sunrise. While you climb, you will find small shops selling snacks. The religious significance of Adam’s Peak is Buddhists believes, it’s the footprint mark of Lord Buddha’s left foot, Hindus believes it’s the footprint of Lord Shiva while Muslims and Christians claim its Adam’s First step after being exiled from the Garden of Eden. whatever, your beliefs, trek to Adam’s Peak is a rare experience.

Pusellawa
1.Ramboda Falls

Ramboda Falls is the 11th tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka and 729th tallest in the World with a height of 945m from sea level. The beautiful Ramboda Falls is created from PunaOya, a tributary of KothmaleOya. Ramboda falls consists of three sections. You will have to climb up to see the top part of the falls. You may find it a bit difficult, but it is worthwhile to see the great view of the top fall and the surrounding. You will have to walk down a bit to see the full section of the bottom fall which is called as Ramboda Basin. You will also find few hotels in this area where you can enjoy a meal or a cup of tea.

Nuwaraeliya

The city consists of a population of over 36000 comprises mainly Sri Lankan Tamils who work as laborers on plantations. NuwaraEliya is situated 150 km away from Colombo in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka.

1.Seetha Amman Temple

The wonderful Seetha Amman Temple dedicated to Sita, is located in the picturesque hills of Nuwaraeliya. It is situated in the exact place where Sri Lankan evil king Ravana held Sita imprisoned about 5000 years ago. The specialty about this colorful temple is that it is one of the very few temples dedicated to Sita. The place bears sign of the monkey –god Hanuman’s feet who helped to rescue Sita from the King Ravana. You will witness a giant foot in a rock near the river which belongs to the monkey God Hanuman who had immense powers to transform himself into any size. Three idols were discovered in this stream, one of which was that of Sita, about a century ago. Devotees strongly got convinced that this is the spot where Sita, the wife of Rama, had bathed and spend time in prayer. The epic part in the Love and War story ‘Ramayana’ took place here which is located 5 kilometers along the Nuwaraeliya to Kandy road. Visit this amazing place that takes us back to 5000 years!

2.Gregory Lake

Renowned as one of the main attractions in Nuwaraeliya, built by Governor William Gregory between 1872 and 1877 for the purpose of providing electricity. The lake is situated in the heart of the Nuwaraeliya town. It has been now converted into a scenic lake park with various recreational activities. The lake also acts as a landing location of amphibious aircraft belonging to the Sri Lankan Air Taxi service. Visitors can go on a boat ride and horseback ride around the lake. This will certainly be memorable in the cold weather. The lake side offers a romantic and photogenic evening for the visitors with an astonishing environment. Gregory Lake will be the ideal and pleasurable spot to enjoy with your family and friends. The ideal time period to visit here is during the April season as the park is full of sports and outdoor activities. Even an annual motor cross event takes place at the racing court above the Lake!

3.Hakgala Botanical Gardens

Hakgala Garden is the second largest Botanical Gardens in Sri Lanka. Visit to Hakgala Garden will definitely add value to your Nuwaraeliya trip. The garden is believed to be the highest set botanical gardens in the world. The attractive garden is located 16km from Nuwaraeliya- Badulla main road. Over 10000 species of flora can be seen inside the gardens. The garden was established in 1884 with many subtropical and tropical plants. Average visitors per year totals up to 500000. Flower beds in elaborate designs and motifs, undoubtedly will fascinate you! Hakgala is connected to the Ramayana and the Sri Lankan King Ravana. It is believed Hakgala have been gifted to Lord Rama’s wife Sita, by the evil King Ravana as a pleasure garden.Hakgala Gardens is a must visit garden in Sri Lanka to explore the beauty in this most paradisiacal garden loved by nature lovers.

  • December to February, it has a cold climate and from April to August, it has a warm climate.

4.Horton Plains

Beautiful highland that is popular among walkers for its mind-bending viewpoint of World’s end. Horton Plains is one of the World Heritage sites in Sri Lanka. The plains are also of outstanding scenic natural beauty with most of the endemic plants and animals of the country. It also bears the 2nd and the 3rd highest peaks of Sri Lanka, Kirigalpoththa and Totupalakanda. Horton Plains offers Sri Lanka’s most important catchment area of almost all major rivers with an area of over 3169 hectares. (about 8% of the total upper montane forests and grasslands of Sri Lanka). Horton Plains is the only National Park, that allows visitors to walk on their own on the tracks in Sri Lanka. How can you miss this adventurous place?
Do not miss to visit the ‘World’s End’ here which is a 4000 feet straight vertical drop. You will also find another inland attraction, Bakers Falls at a distance of 200m beyond World’s End. On your way, you will also witness herds of Sambar Deer including other mammals such as Long-tailed Giant Squirrel, Wild Boar, Strip Necked Mongoose, fishing cat, Toque Monkey etc. other birds include Sri Lankan Wood Pigeon, Dull Blue Flycatcher, Yellow-eared Bulbul, Scaly Thrush and etc. even Leopards can be seen here if you are lucky enough however it is very rare. Picturesque surrounding will offer great photography opportunities.

  • It is a 3-4 hours (9.4km) hike.
  • Polythene bags or covers, lighting material and cigarettes are not allowed to be taken in.
  • The best time to be up the World’s End is towards the afternoon since the area can be covered with mist.
5.Devon Falls

One of the most beautiful cascades in Sri Lanka, situated along the Talawakele, Hatton road in the Nuwaraeliya District. The beautiful fall gives the best view from Dimbulla where there’s a special viewpoint for people with parking facilities. You can see both the amazing cascades, Devon and St. Clair in the lower observation point. You can also have a tasty cup of tea at the Mlesna Tea Centre which is on the other side of the road. The waterfall has got its name from a pioneer British Coffee planter, Mr. Devon who own all the nearby plantations. The glorious fall is 97m high and 1159m above from the sea level. On your way to Nuwaraeliya, you can enjoy a mind blowing view staying on the road. Devon falls is the 19th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka which gives the full force of water during the months of December to March.

6.Laxapana Falls

Renowned as VeddahHiti Ella since once the area was used by Traditional Veddhas. The beautiful Laxapana falls is located on the MaskeliyaOya. The fall has got its name from the presence of iron ore in the rocks. The 126m fall is renowned as the 7th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka and 625th highest in the world. A better and clear view can be seen from the road between Norton Bridge and Maskeliya.

  • Laxapana falls is not recommended for baths as its dangerous. However, visitors can enjoy the stunning view for photographs.
Trincomalee

Trincomalee is most popular for its harbor, which is one of the world’s largest and finest deep water anchorages. Trincomalee is now a destination for whale watching. You must not miss the most beautiful two beaches Nilaveli and Uppuveli. They are well-known for their peaceful looks and beautiful scenery. Next, you can visit the Fort Federick which was built by the Portuguese in 1623. It will be interesting to discover the Hindu temples such as Kali Kovil which takes you to a different atmosphere where you can explore the Tamil culture. On your way, you will be able to witness eye-catching views of three bays with larger vessels and fishing boats. It will also be memorable to watch how the sun go down hiding behind the Dutch Bay.

1.Nilaveli Beach

Prominent as one of the finest beaches in the island. The breathtaking coastline represents the beauty of Sri Lanka. This picturesque beach is located approximately 16 km North of Trincomalee. Along the shore, you will witness many fine resorts to chill. If you are looking a chilling vacation to spend some serious beach time, then Nilaveli is the ideal spot to visit. Nilaveli is the best place if you are seeking a break from the hectic lives. Watersports is highly available here where you can enjoy Snorkeling, Scuba Diving, Swimming etc. Wind surfing and Diving are very popular among tourists and locals here. People in this area are mostly Hindus who consider the cows as sacred. You will also can get to know a bit about the Hindu culture from the people who live here. Across the beach, about 2km into the ocean, you will find the attractive Pigeon island which is famous for Snorkeling. The most ideal time period to visit Nilaveli Beach is during April and October as the sun is at its most intense. Certainly, Nilaveli Beach will make your vacation a Memorable one!

2.Pigeon Island

Stop near the Snorkeling Paradise!

It’s just a short boat ride. The island is surrounded by coral reefs and soft coral which are home to various types of unique fish such as Blacktip reef shark. Even endangered marine turtles reside here. Visitors will get an opportunity to watch colorful tropical fish on one side of the magical island. Snorkeling here will be definitely unforgettable. You can use your own snorkeling equipment’s or can use the equipment’s provided by the hotel. For something special, visit the Kumana National Park, which is about an hour from Arugam Bay. The park is less visited therefore you will be able to experience real wilderness. The bird sanctuary is the main attraction here. However, other animals such as elephants, buffaloes can be spotted. 3.Marble Beach

One of the most beautiful beaches in Trincomalee consisting crystal blue water and there are hardly any waves making it ideal for bathing. The beach is under the control of Air force where visitors must get the permission from the nearby China Bay Air Force camp which can be done easily. This beach has got its name due to the marble stones found in the area. The Beach is also known as Marble Bay Beach. You will be able to see the surface shining like a marble, when the sea is calm and day is bright. This is the uniqueness of Marble Beach in comparison to other beaches. You don’t have to worry about food and accommodation since there is a resort nearby which is run by the Air Force. Another advantage here is; you don’t have to worry about safety as there are life guards in the area. You can enjoy a bath without any fear and the water is crystal clear. You also can Surf and Snorkel here if you are interested. Spend your time here with the blue views. Indeed, it is one of the best beaches you must visit!

4.Koneshwaram Temple

The Hindu temple lies on a high rocky promontory surrounded on three sides by the sea bearing a history of over three millennia. Koneshwaram Temple is regarded as a god’s gift. It is said, Koneshwaram was a well-established and popular temple during the Indian Prince Vijayan arrival. This proves Koneshwaram Temple hides a great big history in it. It is not confirmed about its establishment however a 17th century stone inscription in the temple states its history began in 1580 BC. It is strongly believed, even King Ravana who lived over 5000 years ago in Sri Lanka and his mother was a devout worshipper of Koneshwaram Temple. If this were to be true, then the temple has a history of over 5000 years. The grandeur was mostly lost during the 17th century by Portuguese who has dumped some into the sea, smashed ornamentation and razed structures. However, restoration work was completed in 1963 by reinstalling old pieces and unearthing the very remnants that were buried. Inside the temple is astonishing and are well sculptured. After walking through various courtyard shrines, you will reach the giant statue of Shiva at the Promontory. Koneshwaram is a must visit place to get a taste of ancient monuments of Hinduism.

2.Ruwanwelisaya

The marvelous Ruwanwelisaya is situated next to Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi and renowned as the most venerated Buddhist site in Anuradhapura with a height of 150 feet and a diameter of 379 feet. The specialty of Ruwanwelisaya is its details of items involved in building the stupa from preparation of ground initiated by King Dutugamunu to the ending of constructions by his brother king Saddatissa had been fully recorded in the Mahavansa, the great Chronical of Sri Lanka. 3.Isurumuniya

Renowned for its stone carvings which represents the most famous couple “Isurumuniya Lovers”. Isurumuniya was originally as MeghagiriViharaya. The carving represents Prince Saliya [ the son of King Dutugemunu] and his mistress Asokamala. Asokamalacomes from a cast called “Chandala” and the princessSaliya fell in love with her and finally gave up the right to be the king. To marry Asokamala who is the girl of a lower cast. Even, today modern couples love to be called as the Isurumuniya couples. It is believed king Saliya gave up his kingship for true love. 4.Thuparamaya

Renowned as the oldest and the first stupa that was built in the country after the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka. The stupa holds a special importance to most of the Sri Lankans. The bell shaped Thuparamaya is located in the highly sacred Mahamewnauyana in Anuradhapura. History records Thuparamaya was built the 3rd century BCE by the great king Devanampiyatissa. The stupa was made under the instructions of Mahinda Thero who brought Buddhism to Sri Lanka. Around the stupa, there is a unique architectural feature called ‘Vatadage’ (stupa house) which was built in the 1st century AC. Over 30 out of 179 circular pattern pillars can be still seen around the dagoba. Several kings have renovated it many times however the last recorded renovation was carried out in the 19th century CE. 5.Mihintale

2.Gal viharaya

One of the UNESCO world heritage sites in Pollonnaruwa. The magnificent statues were built by the king Parakramabahu in the 12th century. Four amazing Buddha images are carved into a huge granite stone which shows a seated figure, small seated figure, standing figure and a reclining figure of Lord Buddha. It is another Fabulous architecture in Sri Lanka making Galviharaya a must visit place. This undeniable sculpture in Galvihara shows the great skills and expertise in the art of stone sculpture in Sri Lanka. According to the Novelist ‘Emerson’, Gal viharaya was the only shrine in Sri Lanka which is in the style of Ajantha and Ellora caves in India. There are four caves, the cave of Vijjadharas, Excavated cave, cave of standing image and the 80 feet long cave of reclining image. 3.Parakrama Samudra

Another great construction built by the great king Parakramabahu. ParakramaSamudra initially consisted five large reservoirs to relieve the pressure on the main dam. The main Reservoirs of ParakramaSamudraya are, Thopavewa, EramudaVewa, Dambathula, KalahagalaVewa and BhuVewa. Today what you will see as ParakramaSamudraya is only a part of the original creation. The current ParakramaSamudra is 8½ miles or 14 kilometers in length and 12.2 meters or 40 feet in height. The average depth is 25 feet and the body of water covers 5350 acres. Over 18000 acres of paddy land is supported by this vast reservoir. You will also get a chance to see various kinds of water birds including Pelicans and Cormorants if you visit here. On the edge of the reservoir, you will see the Pollonnaruwa Rest House managed by Hotels Corporation, therefore you can stay here overnight. You will find few star hotels along the dam.

1.Bible Rock

The rock resembles the bible and also known as Bathalegala mountain. It sits at a height of 1688 meters. Bible rock is a scenic mountain near the town of Aranayaka in the Kegalle district. During the British period, the rock was named as Bible Rock due to its appearance when viewed from the Kandy Road. A one-day hike at Bible’s Rock will be fun and if you love sceneries, it is the best spot. Belihuloya

Belihuloya is the ideal place to visit if you are seeking some fresh air with natural beauty since the area is famous for having number of natural bathing places in Sri Lanka.

1.Pahanthudawa Waterfall

The lovely waterfall is situated about 1.5km off Belihuloya. Pahanthudawa waterfall is about 15 ft. in height. If you love to have a fresh water bath, then Pahanthudawa Waterfall is the best place. The waterfall base is carved out of the rock bed that has a shape of an oil lamp. The waterfall has earned this ‘Pahanthudawa’ name as the Sinhala word for lamp is ‘Pahana’.

Some waterfalls in Belihuloya are unmeasurable in depth. The waterfall levels differ time to time. Make sure to keep your loved ones inside shallow areas if they are unable to swim. Make sure you start enjoying after getting proper guidance from your hotel or guide. Avoid bathing or swimming under the influence of liquor.

Tangalle

The picturesque Tangalle is located 195 kilometers away from Colombo. Tangalle is prominence for its beach destination. Its white sandy beach attracts so many visitors every year. Tangalle is a place not to be missed when you visit the south coast of Sri Lanka.

1.Goyambokka Beach

2.Blow Hole

Hummanaya is the only known Blow hole in Sri Lanka and the second largest blow hole in the world. It is situated in a small fishing village called Kudawella. Blow Hole is a geographical feature mostly found in coastal regions. Hummanaya blow hole can shoot up to a height between 25-30m. it’s alife time experience that should not be missed. Unawatuna

Unawatuna is renowned as one of the famous tourist destinations in Sri Lanka located 140km south of Colombo. South of Sri Lanka consists the most beautiful and scenic beaches with blue waters. 2.Jungle Beach

Jungle beach is another must visit spot situated 4km from Unawatuna. It is a small stretch of beach with forest behind it as the name suggests. It’s a beautiful secret spot that everyone seems to know about. The first part of the beach is quite crowded with sun beds. However, it is less crowded than the main Unawatuna Beach. It is a 10-15 minutes’ drive from the center of Unawatuna town. Jungle Beach is one of the ideal places for some snorkeling and other water sports such as surfing and diving. 3.Japanese Peace Pagoda

The Japanese Peace Pagoda on Rumassala hill is one of the impressive Buddhist Stupas in Sri Lanka. The view out across the ocean is amazing. The stupa was built by Japanese Buddhist monks of the Mahayana Sect in 2005. When you look across the water from Galle Fort, Sri Lanka, the Japanese Peace Pagoda resembles a giant marshmallow rising out of the rainforest. 4.Galle Fort

Renowned as the first built fortification by the Portuguese on the South Western Coast of Sri Lanka. 5.Bundala National Park

Situated 251 km South east of Colombo with an area of 6216 hectares is the home for almost 200 species of bird, out of which 58 are migratory birds. If you want some mind blowing bird photographs, Bundala National Park is the ideal place to visit. Bundala is a wonderland that provides shelter to thousands of colorful birds. Between August to April, many migratory birds arrive here. Once up to 2000 flamingos has been recorded here. Lagoons attracts various aquatic birds such as Pelicans, Gulls, Ibis, Black-necked Stork, Teals, Spoonbills etc. Bundala National Park is also a home to 32 species of mammals including Wild Boars, Civets, Spotted Deer, Giant Indian Palm Squirrels etc. four of five species of marine turtles lay eggs on the coast during October and January. If you want to spot elephants, 15-60 elephants gather here during the month of December. Though Bundala National Park is not popular among visitors like Yala,It is a great place to experience some Wildlife.

Mirissa

Katharagama

Katharagama is a place of pilgrimage for a variety of religion such as Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam which is located in south east corner of Sri Lanka. A must visit white dagoba which is twenty nine meters in height and was built during the reign of king Mahasena. The Buddha has stopped here during his third visit to Sri Lanka according to the Dhathuvamsa. The structure of this wonderful stupa dates us back to the third century BC. The Bo tree in Katharagama temple is one of the eight saplings of Sri MahaBodhiya in Anuradhapura. The sacred Kirivehera was also known as Magulmahaseya. Welcome to the Island of Leopards!

Lion is recognized as the king of the jungle. However, leopards are not second to lions. Yala National Park in SriLanka possess the highest leopard density in the world. Beyond the shadow of a doubt, Yala is the most popular and visited National Park in the Pearl of Indian Ocean where all the proud beasts reside aka Leopards.
Yala National Park was established in 1938 in Yala with an area of 1260 square kilometers. Earlier it was a hunting ground for British when SriLanka was under British rule.

Sella Katharagama
1.Ganadevi Kovil

GanadeviKovil in sellaKatharagama is a hindukovil that is situated near the scenic Manik Ganga (River).The kovil attracts devotees from all the religions. visitors must cross the manik river to enter the kovil. On your way to the kovil you will see shops selling sweet meats, toys and other food items for devotees. Interesting folktales are woven round the sellakataragamaganadewikovil. It is the place where gods skanda save walli from and elephant and finally gained walli’s consent. It was god ganapathis plan to disguise himself as an elephant and chase after walliamma, so that his brother god skanda could intervene and save walli from the elephant.

Sella kataragamaGanadevikovil is a must visit place in your trip to katharagama. If you are a newly married couple, then Sella katharagama is the sacred place to obtain blessings for the new life.

2.Lunugamwehera National park

“Another guaranteed spot for herds of Elephants sightings in Sri Lanka”

The park lies between Yala and Udawalawe national parks and it is a home to 43 mammals. The main attraction of this national park are elephants while other animals including palm cat, sloth bear, leopards,Giantsquirrelsetc also lives here. The park is a preferred destination for elephant’s sightings. This rich bio diversity park is a favorable park for herds of elephants and other mammals. The park is also a home to 12 amphibians, 21 species of fish and 33 species of reptiles.

During the bird migration season, the park attracts thousands of water birds, around two hundred species, both migratory and endemic making a popular place for bird breeding and nesting. Very recently, Marshalls has been found nesting in the Lunugamvehera park which was never recorded before in Sri Lanka. If you want to watch birds, then visit the park during the moorings and evenings as mid-day is extremelyhumid and hot.

The Lunugamweherapark is located in the Monaragala district and 261 KM from Colombo. The park can be access via kalavana in the Sabaragamuwa province or Tissamaharama in southern province. Visitors can use which ever they are comfortable. the park is suitable is for visiting all year round being a dry zone forest with rain between November and January.

Haputale

Haputale consists of a population over five thousand inhabitants, mainly of Indians and sri Lankan Tamils descent. The town offers many well developed guest houses and small hotels. Visitors get the chance to witness attractions in the hill country.

1.Adisham bungalow

Adishambungalow is a stone mansion built by sir Thomas lister Villiers, who was an English planter in 1931. The bungalow is surrounded by beautiful and tranquil environment. It is 1KM away from Haputale town in the Badulla District. In 1961, a Roman catholic church purchased this lovely bungalow and converted it to a monastery. The house is now open for visitors which is well preserved with period fittings and furniture.
The bungalow is surrounded by thick forest cover and bird’s sanctuary making it an ideal place to enjoy natures beauty. Visitors can visit this amazing bungalow only on weekends, public holidays and school holidays from 9.00a.m. to 4.30 p.m. and is closed on good Friday, Christmas day and weekdays. If you are in search of real rest from your busy schedule,then Adisham bungalow is the ideal place. However, it is not a commercial guest house that provide all the hotel facilities. Hot water and other things such as blankets, towels and bedsheets will be provided.

2.Diyaluma Falls

Visit the second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka!

Diyaluma being the second highest in Sri Lanka and 361st highest in the world is the perfect spot for a full day adventure. The scenic waterfall is about 23km away from Haputale. Enjoy swimming on top of the 220-meter-high Diyaluma Falls in Sri Lanka. The water comes down with a great force on the rocks is an amazing view and an experiencing. It’s a 3 hours hike in the middle of long grass. The waterfall consists of series of natural pools where you can take a swim but needs to be extra careful when you reach the top. When the falls finally reach the edge, you will see the bridge where you started to walk. You can observe the whole picturesque area. It also offers an opportunity to capture great photographs of nature as the surrounding is very scenic. Make sure to add the Diyaluma Falls to your list of Sri Lankan attractions.

Badulla

Badulla District belongs to the hill country of Sri Lanka having over 2861 square km of land according to statistics of 2011. The city consists of a population of 886000. Badulla is renowned as a region for Buddhist attraction. The area consists of many beautiful waterfalls and cascading tea gardens. Vegetables and Paddy are also cultivated in large scale. Tea being the main commercial crop, Badulla is an agricultural district.

1.Dunhinda Falls

The picturesque Dunhinda waterfall is situated 5 kilometers from Badulla town. Renowned as one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Sri Lanka that has become a tourist destination. The 210 feet high Dunhinda falls gets its name from the smoky dew drops spray. ‘Dun’ is the Sinhala word for smoke, the waterfall has got its name as it looks like a smoke from far. You must witness this smoky waterfall in Sri Lanka. There is a 1.5 km walk from the entrance gate to the waterfall. It will be fun to watch colorful butterflies, wild birds, deers, monkeys on your way. On your way, you will also witness a beautiful small waterfall called KudaDunhinda. Dunhinda waterfall is created by the river named BadullaOya. Walking along the path is worthwhile as the scenery on the top is amazing. Visitors can also reach the foot of the fall and cross the river for a better view.

Be extra careful when you get closer to the waterfall since the waterfall is deep and the rocks are slippery.

The ideal time period to visit here is during June and July as you will get a chance to witness some wildlife too. During November to March, the waterfall carries more water as it is the rainy season.

2.Muthiyangana Raja MahaViharaya

The sacred Muthiyangana Raja MahaViharaya is located in the middle of the Badulla city. The temple takes us back to the time of 19th-18th century BC. Muthiyangana Raja MahaViharaya is renowned as one of the 16 sacred places in the country (one of the Solosmasthana). During Buddha’s visit to Sri Lanka for the third time, Deva King Indaka has invited Buddha to keep a sermon. Later, King Indaka has built a stupa enshrining some MukthakaDathu (drops of sweat turned into Pearls) and hair in this stupa where the birth of Muthiyangana Stupa happened. Later, many kings have intervened to develop this sacred temple. Muthiyangana Raja MahaViharaya is one of the Badulla’s landmarks. The stupa is about 65 feet in height and a diameter of 270 feet. The temple land consists of 4 Bo-trees called Maliyadeva, Ananda Bodhi and a nascent of Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi. You will witness a Makara Thorana when you enter the temple. The Thorana is built by a unique design with six levels. Muthiyangana Raja MahaViharaya is a must visit place in Badulla.

As a respect for the temple and Buddhism, its better if you can wear a full white dress when you visit.

Mahiyangana

Mahiyangana is situated 194km away from Colombo. Renowned for its cultural attraction Mahiyangana Raja MahaViharaya while the longest river in Sri Lanka, Mahaweli runs through Mahiyangana. The longest river provides access to several Bird Sanctuaries, National Parks and aborigine lands.

One of the notable places in the Sri Lankan Buddhism history. Renowned as the place where Lord Buddha visited in his first visit to Sri Lanka after attaining enlightenment. The important event happened on a Duruthu Full Moon Poya Day making it a remarkable day. There is a nice story behind the Muthiyangana Raja MahaViharaya. at the time of Buddha’s first visitthere were Yakka’s (Demon worshipper’s) and Nagas (Snake Worshipper’s). when Lord Buddha arrived at the Mahanaga Garden. Yakkas and Nagas were surprised to see Lord Buddha clad in a yellow robe and shaven headed. Yakkas were even more surprised to see Lord Buddha sitting cross legged in the air. Yakkas begged the Buddha to save their lives by setting them free through fear, emotional, excitement and apprehensive of danger. MahiyanganaChetiya now stands where Lord Buddha sat. Commandant Saman, the yakka who was amongst them, elevated to the first phase of spiritual eminence after listening to the discourse and came to be known as SamanDeviyo. Prepare to go back to events that took place many centuries ago by including Mahiyangana Raja MahaViharaya in your itinerary. It will be an incomplete Sri Lankan tour, if you miss this sacred place of Buddha’s first visit to the Pearl of Indian Ocean. You must visit this amazing place that is improved and changed by many kings, making it more impressive with endeavor.

On your way, make sure to take a look at the SoraboraWewa which is an ancient reservoir in Mahiyanagana constructed by a giant named Bulatha during the era of King Dutugemunu.

1.Bambarakanda Falls

Witness the highest Waterfall in Sri Lanka!
Bambarakanda Waterfall being the highest waterfall in Sri Lanka and 299th tallest in the world is a must visit place. The beautiful fall is located in the Badulla District among the scenic ever green forest in the Kalupahana area. The fall has a vertical height of 263m and originates from KudaOya which is a branch of the Walawe river. There is a natural pool, where you can have a nice time bathing before your meal. The picturesque environment offers opportunities for great photographs too. If you are interested to climb the top of the fall, then Bambarakanda has a trail. It will take 1-2 hours to climb the Bambarakanda and the hiking season starts from April to September. This waterfall drops as a thin line from a rocky outcrop which is not wide.

Note

The ideal time period to visit Bambarakanda falls is between the months of March and May as there is best flow of water. The dry season starts from June to September and there is less water in the fall. The rainy season starts from November to February, making it difficult to get close to the fall.
Avoid Leeches and wear good hiking Boots.
Be extra careful as the trail is slippery.
Take necessary things such as water bottles, a towel etc.
